# Visit Our Jewish Historic Cemetery in Lakewood, Colorado 80215

Located roughly 15 minutes from Downtown Denver, Colorado it's easy for locals and visitors alike to schedule a trip to our historic cemetery in Lakewood, Colorado. In 1995, Golden Hill Cemetery, known as The Hill to locals, was granted a place on the National Register of Historic Places. Until recently, it was one of only three Jewish Cemeteries nationwide to hold this distinction.

## Rich History of Our Nation's Jewish Heritage

Opening in 1908, The Hill came about when it was deemed necessary to have a place to bury people of the Jewish faith who succumbed to "the white death." Lakewood saw an influx of Jewish residents who arrived from the east coast to have their tuberculosis treated at one of two sanatoriums that treated Jewish people.

The people currently buried at Lakewood's historic cemetery arrived from the overcrowded coastal cities seeking healing among others who shared their faith and heritage. Many of these people served during WWI, and later arrivals escaped persecution during the rise of the Nazis.
